Colonial Preparatory
School is a small private middle school, grades 6, 7, and 8, located in
Fredericksburg, Virginia. Parental demand for affordable, effective education
persuaded us to open the school in 1995. The school started with just three
students and has been growing ever since. In addition to our regular students
we serve Home School Students throughout the Fredericksburg area.
MISSION
Colonial Preparatory
School's mission is to offer a rigorous, traditional, and individualized
advanced preparatory education to students who are able and motivated and
whose parents value education.
PHILOSOPHY
Our mission is based
on the basic philosophy that success in the future will require a solid
foundation in academics including mathematics, science, reading and writing
skills, social sciences, and computer skills. We believe every child can
achieve success in school. This is accomplished through individualized
attention to each child's strengths and potential. Colonial Preparatory
is rigorous in that students can expect serious classes, ample homework,
and an insistence on all-out effort. Colonial Preparatory is personalized,
offering small classes, special help, frequent communication with parents,
and student-teacher interaction outside the classroom. With this philosophy,
students can achieve academic excellence.

The middle school
curriculum builds on the skills and enthusiasm nurtured in the elementary
grades. Our curriculum is based on strong academics and cultural experiences.
Required classes (grades 6, 7, and 8) are Literature (Reading, Vocabulary,
Spelling), English (Writing, Grammar, Research), Physical Education, and
Art. Math is divided into Mathematics (grade 6), Pre-Algebra (grade 7),
Algebra and Geometry (grade 8). Students testing higher than grade level
in Math will be advanced to the next level. The Sciences include Earth
Science (grade 6), Life Science (grade 7), and Physical Science (grade
8). All Science classes include supervised laboratory experiences. Social
Studies encompasses World History (grade 8), Civics and Economics (grade
7), and U.S History (grade 6). All students receive instruction in the
development and use of Microsoft Office Products and basic keyboarding
skills. All major subjects are enhanced by computer support, through
the use of various tutorials. A Study Hall is offered to all students at
the end of the regular school hours, where individualized help, research,
or club activities can take place.

Every two weeks,
we will visit the Central Rappahannock Regional Library during the morning
hours, for Library skills, Research, and Reading materials. To enhance
students' cultural experiences, there are frequent field trips to various
locations in Virginia, Washington, D. C. and Maryland. The school also
hosts guest speakers on various issues such as safety, health, the environment,
local history, and public affairs. There are after school clubs such as
4-H, Young Astronauts, Literary and School Newsletter, and Art, based on
a minimum club enrollment.

The abilities Colonial
Preparatory School looks for in its candidates for admission are not defined
by any battery of standardized tests. Quickness of intellect, precision
of memory, and resourceful-ness in problem solving are desirable traits.
Colonial Preparatory particularly values curiosity, love of truth, honesty,
diligence of effort, and humor - and these are not multiple-choice traits.
Students are admitted on the basis of a personal interview, a visit to
our school, a teacher recommendation, the transcript from the previous
school, and the results of Colonial Preparatory's own admissions test.
Admission tests are given to determine individual academic placement. Inquiry
may be made at any time. Appointments for interviews must be made in advance.
Applications are accepted and students are admitted as long as vacancies
exist, but it is advisable to apply early.
One of the main
goals at Colonial Preparatory School, is to offer a quality education at
an affordable price. Several Payment Plans are available. A nonrefundable
Book Rental and Supply Fee is also required.

Students begin their
day at 8:00 a.m., with classes beginning at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 4:00
p.m. Monday through Thursday. Parents are a very important part of our
school. Parents will receive interim reports at mid-term, with report cards
being issued every six weeks. A mandatory parent-teacher conference will
be scheduled at the end of each term. 1st Semester and 2nd Semester exams
will be given in all classes. Conferences are encouraged and can be scheduled
as needed throughout the school year. A quarterly, informal, Parent-Teacher
night will take place to discuss educational concerns, in addition to special
Parent-Student events. Parents are invited to sit in on their child's classes
at any time. Note: Times may vary.
